Event, 27 November 2018: Q&A with Yunna Takeuchi, City Unscripted

Yunna Takeuchi – Co-founder & CMO, City Unscripted, joins our How to scale your fast growth business next week. She shares her founder journey with us here.

The biggest surprise running this business is…
Underestimating how consuming it would be. I had to work too many late nights and weekends at the same time as having to look after a newborn. It interfered with my personal life and it was not easy for my partner who thankfully has been very supportive.  Now looking back I can finally breathe and pat myself on the back and feel so proud to not have given up.

The game changer in my business was…
We were adamant that we wanted to only promote our hosts and not do what our competitors were doing and sell “themed experiences”. We wanted to be different. But customers still wanted to have an idea of what they could do in a city, so we spent a lot of time creating virtual experiences for them anyway. So we had to get off our high horses and admit that we were doing the wrong thing. We conceded and built experiences and bookings started flowing in alongside 5 star reviews!

I spend most of my time…
To be honest, until very recently, there has been very little time to lead properly. We are three co-founders and we all have been doing a bit of everything. I have spent days resizing photos and doing boring but necessary jobs instead of looking at data to make better decisions. But when you are running on such tight resources you are so stretched and the demands you have to solve immediate issues are just as pressing as the demands you have to try to understand your business and where it’s going. If I could do it again I would make more time for thinking, but I guess it is easier said than done.

My supports system is…
Nick, our founder managed to build an amazing board with very experienced people who have supported us from the start and without them, re-investing when we were running low on funds, we would not have made it. On a personal basis, however, it has been Anna, one of our co-founders with whom I have worked for many years. We have pulled each other up at times when we felt we couldn’t do this.  And of course, my partner who I have no idea how he put up with me. He encouraged me despite the fact that the first thing I did when waking up was to turn on my laptop to check emails and get on the phone to solve issues before I could say good morning!

Having the right legal support means…
Knowing that we have the team at Peregrine looking out for us has been very comforting.  They’re always available for a steer on something, they’re responsive and they are very good value.  It is refreshing to have advisers who understand the journey we’re on and who have taken the time to understand the ins and outs of our business.
